I'm three weeks away from embarking on what I expect to be, a life changing trip.
Many of you are aware and for those of you that aren't, I'm about midway through my second year of Naturopathic Medical School at Bastyr University in Seattle. As if moving across the country, starting a new career and throwing myself into 27 credit hours/quarter of classes wasn't challenging enough at 28-years-old, I decided to join my friends in creating a Bastyr student chapter of Naturopaths Without Borders. Right now, this concept of 'without borders' for me is ironic. I've spent the last year and a half in a medical textbook bubble at my little school tucked away in St. Edward's State Park. So how do I pull myself out of this comfortable little bubble? I buy a ticket to Haiti and volunteer at a new birthing center and health clinic called MamaBaby Haiti.
What do I expect to gain from this trip? I don't think we every really know what we are traveling to find, but I hope to gain a better grasp of what I already know. I have no expectations and I will get on that plane with an open mind and an open heart.
My intention with this space is to share my experience and growth while in Haiti and hopefully beyond. I encourage you to ask questions, share your insights and if you have the time, read about what MamaBaby has been up to.
